2024 IBC: What Changed in the International Building Code

Overview

The 2024 International Building Code (IBC), published by the International Code Council (ICC), is the most widely adopted building code in the United States. This edition includes updates across fire protection, structural requirements, accessibility, and energy provisions.

Structural Design Updates

Several changes affect how structural loads are calculated and applied:

• Updated seismic design maps reflect the latest USGS hazard data, which may change seismic design categories for some locations
• Wind load provisions have been refined to align with ASCE 7-22, including updated wind speed maps for coastal and hurricane-prone regions
• Snow load calculations include new drift provisions for multi-level roofs and updated ground snow load data
• Mass timber construction continues to expand with Types IV-A, IV-B, and IV-C construction now permitted for taller buildings, up to 18 stories in some configurations

Fire Protection Changes

• Automatic sprinkler requirements have been extended to additional occupancy types and building configurations
• Fire barrier and fire wall provisions have been clarified, particularly for mixed-use buildings
• Smoke control systems in high-rise buildings have updated performance criteria
• Lithium-ion battery storage in buildings now has specific fire protection requirements that coordinate with NFPA 855

Accessibility

Accessibility provisions in Chapter 11 have been updated to better align with the ICC A117.1-2017 standard:

• Updated accessible route requirements for existing buildings undergoing renovation
• Clarified elevator requirements for accessible floors in multi-story buildings
• New provisions for adult changing stations in certain assembly and mercantile occupancies
• Updated requirements for accessible parking including EV charging station accessibility

Energy Provisions

While detailed energy requirements are covered by the IECC, the 2024 IBC includes:

• Updated references to IECC 2024 and ASHRAE 90.1-2022
• New provisions encouraging solar-ready and EV-ready construction in new buildings
• Strengthened requirements for building envelope performance in climate zones 4 through 8
